2013 NFL Offensive ROY Odds and Predictions – NFL Rookie of the Year Favorites: To say that the 2012 rookie class set the bar high for future classes might be the understatement of the century. After all, rookie quarterbacks Andrew Luck, Robert Griffin III and Russell Wilson all led their teams to the playoffs with Luck setting a record for passing yards by a rookie, RG3 setting a rookie record for QB rating and Wilson tying Peyton Manning’s record for touchdown passes by a rookie. Meanwhile, running back Doug Martin ranked fifth in the NFL in rushing, and Trent Richardson ranked fifth in rushing scores. Heck, even receiver T.Y. Hilton was impressive, topping 800 yards and ranking fifth in the NFL in yards per catch. Griffin ultimately took home Offensive Rookie of the Year honors, but in most years, any of the above mentioned players could have won the award. Whether or not this year’s rookie class can live up to the standards set by last year’s class remains to be seen, but in the meantime, here are the frontrunners for the 2013 Offensive Rookie of the Year Award heading into the 2013 NFL season.

The Favorites

It is looking more and more like quarterback E.J. Manuel will open the year as the starter for the Buffalo Bills, and as the only rookie QB that is likely to start all season, he has a chance to stand out from the pack. After all, no position on the field has more chances to make plays, and Manuel’s running ability gives him even more chances than most. Meanwhile, the weapons around him aren’t bad, and if Manuel can just make the Bills respectable in 2013, Rookie of the Year honors are very possible.

2019

The St, Louis Rams were in desperate need of an explosive playmaker on offense so they traded up to the No. 8 pick to land receiver Tavon Austin. Plain and simple, Austin is blazing fast, and he can turn any touch into six points. Playing for an offense that is lacking in weapons, Austin is set to get plenty of targets in the passing game and even some carries out of the backfield. A big year in terms of yards from scrimmage could be on tap, and the highlight-reel plays he is sure to produce won’t hurt his chance of winning Rookie of the Year honors either.

The Dark Horses

It seems like the Houston Texans have been searching for a No. 2 receiver ever since Andre Johnson was drafted, and they may have finally found the answer in first-round pick DeAndre Hopkins. His athleticism and strength already has him penciled in as the starter opposite Johnson, and with Johnson drawing every opponent’s best corner and constant double teams, Hopkins should have plenty of chances to beat his man and make plays. If he makes enough plays, Rookie of the Year honors could be headed his way.

While the Denver Broncos’ high-powered offense revolves around the arm of Peyton Manning, the star QB isn’t afraid to hand the ball off when the defense tries to stop the passing game. In fact, Manning tends to favor running the ball down around the goal line. Second-round pick Montee Ball should be a major beneficiary, and the same combination of power and vision that allowed him to thrive between the tackles and find the end zone at a record pace in college should translate to the NFL. A double-digit touchdown campaign isn’t out of the question, and neither are Rookie of the Year honors for Ball.

Hoping to jumpstart their offense, the Cincinnati Bengals used their first-round pick on tight end Tyler Eifert. Not only is Eifert the best tight end in his rookie class, but he is athletic and polished enough to line up as a receiver at times. Granted, incumbent Jermaine Gresham is also a quality player at the position, but the Bengals didn’t spend a first-round pick on Eifert not to give him his chances. With star receiver A.J. Green sure to garner a lot of attention from opposing defenses, Eifert will have winnable matchups on almost every snap. It is very possible that he becomes the Bengals’ second-best option in the passing game as soon as this year, and if that happens, Rookie of the Year honors are also very possible.

The Sleeper

The Pittsburgh Steelers have lost their identity a bit on the offensive side of the ball in recent years, but after retooling the offensive line in the 2012 draft, they grabbed running back Le’Veon Bell in the second round of this year’s draft. Bell is a prototypical Pittsburgh back, and will he may not run away from opponents, he will run them over and wear them down. Bell has a good chance to earn a bulk of the carries, and a solid season of 1,000 or so yards and 8-10 scores could be more than enough to earn him the Rookie of the Year Award.
